Animal Care Internship

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Live Animal Care Center (LACC) staff is responsible for the care of a diverse collection of animals that are utilized for educational activities such as exhibits, and new virtual experiences including programming for families at home and for school classrooms. Our collection is comprised of over 200 animals representing 80 different species. The LACC is comprised of 3 full time zoo keepers, 2 part time zoo keepers, an assistant Live Animal Curator, a Live Animal Curator and a Manager of Living Collections. The department is staffed 7 days a week and operates 365 days a year.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Interns will learn the daily care of both program and exhibit animals. Responsibilities will include: general upkeep of the LACC, animal observations, diet preparation, enclosure cleaning, record keeping, animal enrichment and training practices. Interns will have the opportunity to learn how to properly handle live animals during presentations as well as learning important skills for developing and presenting educational programs. Upon completion of the program interns will have a better understanding of the proper management of live animals in a museum setting.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with the daily care of the collection.
  • Clean and maintain animal enclosures and exhibits.
  • Prepare diets
  • Complete an enrichment project
  • Learn proper handling techniques
  • Complete an education project Live animal program or other educational program.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Undergraduate or Graduate student
  • Interested in pursuing an animal-oriented career
  • Some background experience with animals is desirable, but not required.
  • Willingness to get dirty.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated communication skills

LENGTH OF INTERNSHIP: Summer (late May/ early June - min/late August)

WORK SCHEDULE: 2 days per week, 7 working hours/day with a 1-hour lunch (9a-5p). Typically mix of weekdays and weekend.

PAY RATE: Unpaid and/or for course credit

LOCATION: On-site only
