PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The BEST program (Buddies Exploring Science Together) is a partnership between the Museum of Science, Boston University's Occupational Therapy Program and the Orchard Gardens K-8, Curley K-8, and Jackson Mann K-8 public schools in Boston. This innovative new field trip program supports middle school students on the Autism spectrum with a particular focus on the students' social participation goals and science learning. Museum educators, Boston University Occupational Therapy Graduate students and BPS teachers team up to create six weeks of field trips that help students feel comfortable in the Museum and spark their passion and curiosity for science. They participate in special programs, live presentations and exhibit hall exploration in a community setting along with their peers. Throughout their visits students have the support of the Museum Educators, BU OT students and their teachers in developing social and science skills.


POSITION SUMMARY:

The BEST Partnership intern will support the day to day planning an execution of the BEST program. Each week he or she will work with Museum Educators to carry out planning and preparations for school visits and student field trips. On the day of the trips the intern will welcome the visiting students as they arrive at the Museum, facilitate their social and science learning, and assist in carrying out various educational activities. In addition to directly supporting the BEST program, the intern will take part in other programming for school aged audiences based in his or her interests and the needs of the school and youth programs department.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Program support - complete day-to-day tasks in the BEST Partnership Program including greeting partner schools, collecting and storing their coats, assisting staff and partners on the floor to ensure successful field trip experiences for BEST students. 
  • Work closely with education staff to prepare for weekly visits and develop and carry out activities that connect classroom and Museum learning. 
  • General program support for the school visits department including learning interpretation based school program activities.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Patience and enthusiasm for work with ALL types of learners with a variety of special needs. 
  • Excitement surrounding informal science learning and teaching
  • Flexibility and willingness to work on a wide variety of tasks


SPECIAL SKILLS:

  • Experience working with Special Education populations preferred


LENGTH OF INTERNSHIP:

Winter/Spring 2018 (January - May)


WORK SCHEDULE:

14-21 Hours per week, Wednesday and Thursdays from 9-1:30 required.


STARTING SALARY:

Between $11.00 & $11.25 hourly
