PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The School & Youth Programs department at the Museum of Science hosts several school partnerships each academic year. The largest of these partnerships has been with Fenway High School since 1992. Fenway High School, a Boston Public Pilot School is committed to providing job-readiness skills through institutional partnerships. For over 2 decades one class of Fenway High School students has come to the Museum of Science every Tuesday. While at the Museum students take a project based STEM class and learn science by teaching others through volunteering, where they work as Museum educators. Additionally, the Museum hosts partnerships, workshops and volunteer opportunities for high school students in Cambridge Community Charter School, Salem High School, and Prospect Hill Academy throughout the school year, and actively seeks to partner with other area schools through our High School Science Series and Job Shadows.


POSITION SUMMARY:

The High School Partnership Intern will work closely with the School & Youth Programs Staff and Fenway teachers to support weekly science class and student learning. The intern will also assist with partner high school workshops and events throughout the academic year, including the High School Science series program.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Be a Positive Role Model and Mentor for High School Students to ensure students build confidence as learners and leaders.
  • Assist in the training and support of high school volunteers. 
  • Assist Fenway Science Teacher and Youth Programs Staff in planning and implementing weekly science classes. 
  • Assist School & Youth staff with the preparation, implementation, and clean-up of up to 10 High School Science Series programs each year.


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Interest in working with high school aged youth 
  • High level of initiative, enthusiasm, and self-direction 
  • Undergraduate student, graduate student, or career changer with a strong interest and/or background in engineering, science, or education preferred.


SPECIAL SKILLS:

  • Previous experience working with urban high school age youth preferred.


LENGTH OF INTERNSHIP:

September/October- May Fall 2018 and Winter/Spring 2019,


WORK SCHEDULE:

Must be available Tuesdays. One additional weekday day is required (flexible)


STARTING SALARY:

Unpaid and/or for course credit OR Between $11.00 & $11.25 hourly
