Museum of Science Eye Opener Internship

Museum of Science, Boston

Through the generous support of the Germeshausen family foundation, the Eye Opener Program at the Museum of Science provides a very unique field trip experience for Boston Public School second graders. Our volunteers, or "Museum Friends", take the second graders on a special tour of the Museum, including a behind the scenes look at the animals, and encourage interest in learning science outside the classroom. Teachers benefit from a hassle free field trip, a professional development workshop led by a Museum educator, and time to explore the Museum's educator resources and curriculum connections. Our very dedicated core of teen and adult volunteers support the program while continuing lifelong learning of science related topics.

An internship with the Eye Opener program provides educational experience and professional skills in a variety of different areas within Museum and in local classrooms. One of the major responsibilities of the Eye Opener intern is to learn and present the Eye Opener pre-visit demonstration for Boston Public School second graders. Each week the intern will travel off-site with the staff to various schools in Boston and be responsible for leading 45-minute presentations in up to 3 different classrooms of 20-25 students. This opportunity allows the intern to develop and practice skills such as public speaking and classroom management, while also providing a background in second grade science competency. In addition to the pre-visit presentations the intern provides valuable program support during the Eye Opener morning. Depending on where they are needed, the intern will supervise adult and high school volunteers, assist teachers and second graders in their arrival and departure, and/or tour second graders around the museum. The intern will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of populations including second graders, teenagers, teachers, and retirees, and will gain experience interacting with all of these groups.
